Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. They are third-party figures, sources can disagree, and none of them is our offer.

Bara Beach, Tanjung Bira, is a cove about 2.4 km north of the main beach, according to a resort based on it. Bira Beach is the better documented public beach and draws holiday crowds; the resort describes Bara as sheltered from the south-easterly wind. That operator says neither has lifeguards, and much of the detail about Bara comes from it.
What is Bara Beach in Tanjung Bira?
Bara is a cove on the western side of the cape. The Seascapes Bara Beach page says it faces west-north-west, and the Seascapes guide says the western coast looks over the Flores Sea and gets the sunset. Seascapes is a resort on this beach, and it sells rooms there. Most of the published detail about Bara traces back to that single commercial source, so this comparison names the origin of each claim and you should weigh them accordingly.
Public sources say far less about Bara than about its neighbour. The national tourism site has a full listing for Bira Beach, with facilities and opening hours, and Bara has no equivalent official entry to point to here. That gap does not make Bara better or worse. It means you will plan with less second-hand information, and you should ask more questions of whoever is hosting you.

How far is it from Bira Beach?
Close enough to walk, though the figures differ, partly because they do not start from the same point and partly because the tide decides the route.
| Source | Distance | Time given | Measured from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seascapes guide (resort) | Roughly 2.5 km | About half an hour on foot along the sand | Bira village |
| Seascapes Bara page (resort) | About 2.4 km | 5 minutes by car or scooter | The main beach |
| Sulawesi.com (tour seller) | Not given | About twenty minutes on foot, when the tide is right | Bira |
Half an hour or twenty minutes? The two walking figures come from a resort and a tour seller, and neither gives a method. Allow the longer time, and treat the Sulawesi.com condition as the part that matters: ask about the tide before you leave, because a route along the sand depends on there being sand. With bags or small children, the road is the simpler choice, and the resort's five-minute figure is for a car or scooter.
How do the two beaches differ?
The table sticks to what each source says. An empty claim is marked as such, because silence in the sources is not evidence of absence on the ground.
| Point | Bira Beach | Bara Beach |
|---|---|---|
| Who describes it | National tourism site, Detik, resort guide | Mainly the resort based there |
| Water | "Relatively calm" waves (tourism site, general wording) | Sheltered from the south-easterly wind (resort page) |
| Listed facilities | Parking, toilets, prayer room, warungs, gazebos | No public listing to cite |
| Crowds | Busiest at weekends and school holidays (resort guide) | No count given |
| Lifeguards | None (resort guide) | None (resort guide) |
| Shore snorkeling | Activity listed; gear hired from residents (Detik) | Reef reached by swimming from the sand (resort) |
| Boats to Liukang Loe | Yes (Detik) | Yes (Detik) |
A fuller picture of the main beach, with its visitor counts, is on the Bira Beach page. Is Bara quieter? No published count separates the two. Go and look on a weekday if your plans allow, rather than booking on the assumption.
What does the resort say about shelter at Bara?
Its page says the cove faces west-north-west and is sheltered from the prevailing south-easterly wind. That is an operator's account of its own beach, with no published measurement behind it, and it does not compare the water at Bara with the water at Bira.
Shelter from one wind also says little about another. The Seascapes guide itself says December to March brings wind and short heavy showers, so a cove that works well in the south-easterly months may behave differently then. Do not treat "sheltered" as a permanent property of the beach. The government advice on unpatrolled beaches, set out on the safety page, applies here as much as anywhere.
Can you snorkel from the sand?
According to the Seascapes diving page, yes: snorkelers can swim out to the reef off Bara Beach from the sand, and the resort tells them to go with a buddy because the beach has no lifeguard. That advice is the useful part. A resort with a stake in promoting its own reef still puts the buddy rule first. For how this compares with a boat trip, and what beginners should watch for, read the guide to snorkeling in Tanjung Bira.
Can you get boats from there?
Yes, on the reports available. Detik puts Liukang Loe about 3.5 km from both Bira and Bara beaches and about 20 minutes by boat, while an agency guide says about 15 minutes. There is no ticket office, the resort guide says: you settle a price and a return time in cash with a boatman on the sand. Settle both before you step aboard, and check the life jackets, including child sizes, since the UK government warns these are not always available.
The price table on this page shows one figure, a whole-boat snorkeling rate that the resort lists as an add-on. Read it as the resort's own rate, not what a boatman on the beach will necessarily ask, and check the resort's page before you rely on it. More on the crossing itself is in the Liukang Loe island guide.
Which suits whom?
These are conditional suggestions drawn from the differences above, and no property is being recommended.
- Bira Beach suits first-time visitors without their own transport who want listed toilets, warungs and gazebos on hand, and people who enjoy a lively holiday beach.
- Bara Beach may suit those who put a cove the resort calls sheltered, and the sunset side of the cape, first and are happy to rely on their lodging for meals and facilities. Confirm what is actually there before you commit, including dinner: the resort guide says many homestays serve breakfast only and that warungs wind down by about nine, and the resort has a restaurant of its own to sell.
- Staying at one and visiting the other is realistic, given the short distance, though the resort guide warns that narrow unlit roads after dark are risky on an unfamiliar bike, so settle how you will get back. If you are choosing a base, the guide on where to stay in Bira covers the areas.
- Wanting neither? The resort guide says the eastern coast north of Panrang Luhu Beach has three more beaches, Kasuso, Mandala Ria and Samboang, mostly used by domestic visitors.
What else should you know about Bara and Bira?
How far is Bara Beach from Bira Beach?
About 2.4 km from the main beach by the resort's own figure, and roughly 2.5 km from Bira village in its guide. Bara is five minutes by car or scooter, the resort says.
Can you walk from Bira to Bara Beach?
Yes, along the sand, though the time depends on who you ask: about half an hour in the resort guide, about twenty minutes in a tour seller's article, when the tide is right.
Is Bara Beach better than Bira Beach?
No neutral source ranks them. A resort based at Bara describes it as sheltered, while Bira has more publicly listed facilities. Your priorities decide, and a short visit to both is easy.
Can you snorkel at Bara Beach?
The resort based there says the reef can be reached by swimming from the sand, with a buddy, since the beach has no lifeguard. Check the water and wind on the day before you go in.
Which published prices did we check?
Public third-party rates and official notices, each with its source and the month we checked it. Sources disagree, some figures are old, and rates change, so check the source before you rely on a figure. These are not our offers.
| Item | Published price | Source | Checked |
