Festival Pinisi Bulukumba is the regency's numbered festival of pinisi and maritime culture, and its dates move. The tourism office announced 6 to 8 September for the 2024 edition, while RRI reported 15 to 17 October for 2026. No date for the next edition is given here, so confirm it with the tourism office before you commit money or time.

What is Festival Pinisi Bulukumba?

It is a regency festival built around the local boatbuilding tradition. The regency's tourism office describes it as raising the maritime cultural identity of Bulukumba, and that fits a place nicknamed Bumi Panrita Lopi with the motto Bulukumba Berlayar. Rubrik reported that the XVI edition was part of the Karisma Event Nusantara 2026 list, which places it on a national events roster.

The craft behind it has wider recognition: UNESCO inscribed pinisi boatbuilding in South Sulawesi on its Representative List in 2017. The inscription concerns the craft and has nothing to do with the festival itself, and our Tana Beru boatyards page explains what it does and does not cover.

This site has no role in running the festival. We sell no tickets and hold no seats, and we cannot change the programme. Dates, venues and programme items below come from the organisers and press reports; the manners list is our suggestion.

When is it held?

The two editions documented here fell in different months, so you cannot infer the next date from the last one.

When is it held?
EditionDatesReported byWhat the source adds
XIV (2024)6 to 8 SeptemberBulukumba tourism officeDates as announced by the office
XVI (2026)15 to 17 OctoberRRIOpening at Pantai Merpati

That is a gap of more than five weeks on the calendar between two editions only two years apart. Anyone who assumed "early September" in 2026 would have missed it entirely.

Public detail can also firm up late. For the 2026 edition, the reports cited on this page are dated 18 September, 9 October and 13 October, for a festival opening on 15 October. That is a good reason to stay flexible on the details even after you have a date.

On weather alone, both known dates sit inside the April to October dry-season window described by the national tourism site. That is background and not a forecast, and the best time to visit Bira page shows how sources differ on the seasons.

Where do events take place?

The festival spreads across more than one site, and the 2026 programme is the clearest evidence available:

  • Opening: Pantai Merpati, according to RRI.
  • Annyorong Lopi: Pantai Panrang Luhu in Desa Bira, according to Beranda Timur, quoting the programme.
  • Pinisi Sailing: an event in Bulukumba, in the same report.

Treat that as one year's layout and not a permanent venue map. It does mean your choice of base matters. The national tourism site gives about 40 km and about 1 hour between Bulukumba town and Tanjung Bira Beach, so a programme split between town and cape can involve real driving. Once the venues for your year are published, look at where to stay in Bira and at Panrang Luhu Beach with those venues in mind. If an evening event means driving back to the cape after dark, plan that leg before the day.

What is annyorong lopi?

Annyorong lopi is the procession of moving a newly built pinisi from yard to sea, done together by residents, according to Rubrik. You will also see it spelled Anyorong Lopi, including on the national tourism calendar. The point to keep in mind is that it is communal labour with ritual meaning, so a visitor is a guest at something that would matter without an audience.

Can you watch one? In 2026 it was a listed programme item with a named beach, so a visitor had a reasonable place to start asking. Viewing rules and times are not published, so ask how close the public may stand. We know of no public launch calendar, so ask locally once you know your dates, and accept that a launch may not happen during your stay.

What else is on the programme?

The national tourism calendar for 2026 lists rituals including Songkabala Ribantilang, Ammosi and Anyorong Lopi, plus Kajang culture, food and craft exhibitions. Spellings vary between sources. The calendar lists these names without explaining them, so ask an organiser or a local host what you are watching.

A Kajang culture exhibition at a festival is a different thing from a visit to the customary village, which has strict rules of its own. See the Ammatoa Kajang village guide if you are thinking of combining the two.

Manners matter here. The national tourism site's general advice on pinisi visits is that they should follow local rules and permission, and we apply that to ritual moments with these suggestions of our own:

  • Follow whoever is organising, and residents, on where to stand, especially near a moving hull.
  • Ask before photographing people in ceremony, and put the camera down if the answer is unclear.
  • Dress modestly, and stay out of areas that are being kept clear.
  • Buy food and crafts from the exhibitors if you want to contribute directly.

How crowded does it get?

We have no attendance figure for the festival. One indirect clue: the tourism office counted about three times as many visitors on the long weekend of 14 to 16 September 2024 as on 7 to 9 September, and that earlier window overlaps the dates announced for that year's festival. Neither count measures the festival, and the timing page has the figures. Check the public-holiday calendar as well as the festival dates.

How do you confirm the next dates?

Work from the organiser outwards and check the year on every page you open, because old edition pages remain online and look current at a glance.

  1. Look at the Bulukumba tourism office site for an event page or technical notice for the new edition number.
  2. Check the national tourism calendar for a listing with that year in its title.
  3. Look for dated press from state radio or regional outlets quoting the programme.
  4. Only then ask your lodging or a driver what they have heard locally.

Until two of those agree, keep bookings changeable where you can. Even a published date can shift, so avoid planning a tight flight connection around a single ceremony.

What else should you know about Festival Pinisi Bulukumba?

How do I reach the desk?

If your dates depend on the festival, tell the desk the edition year and what you hope to see, on WhatsApp +62 811-3941-4563 or at bd@juaraholding.com. The desk has no special access to the programme and cannot reserve a place at any ceremony. A request can become a paid booking, which gives us a commercial interest, and a written offer would state any fee first.

Planning a trip to Bira?

Send the desk your dates, group size, and what you want to do. The desk replies in writing.
