Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. They are third-party figures, sources can disagree, and none of them is our offer.

Bira Beach, also called Tanjung Bira Beach, is the main public beach on the cape in Bulukumba, South Sulawesi. Official tourism material describes very fine white sand and relatively calm waves, with parking, toilets and a prayer room. Expect food stalls and rental gazebos, heavy crowds on holiday weekends, and no lifeguards, according to a resort guide.

What is Bira Beach like?

Bira Beach sits in Bira village, Bonto Bahari district, Bulukumba Regency, and it is the stretch other beaches on the cape get measured against. Indonesia's national tourism site describes very fine white sand and relatively calm waves. Read that as a general description rather than a daily report, because the sea here changes with wind and tide.

The same site says sunrise and sunset can both be seen in the Tanjung Bira area because of the shape of the cape. That is a claim about the area, not about one patch of sand. The Seascapes guide, published by a resort on neighbouring Bara Beach, splits them by coast, with sunset on the western side and sunrise on the eastern. If you want both in one day, plan to move, and see how the cape fits together.

Who else will be there? Mostly Indonesians. Bira zone management recorded 564,026 domestic and local visitors in 2024 against 2,860 foreign visitors, Antara reported, which works out at roughly 200 to one. The foreign count was about 20 per cent above 2023. Those numbers cover the whole zone rather than this beach alone, but they set the right expectation: this is a domestic holiday destination first, so picture weekenders from Makassar rather than a quiet foreign enclave.

The tourism listing confirms that toilets exist and is silent on showers. If that matters, for instance with small children or an older relative, ask your lodging before you set out. "Open 24 hours" describes access as well, and it should not be read as lit, staffed or watched at night. Stalls keep their own hours.

The Detik report dates from 8 May 2024, so read its stalls and rates as a 2024 snapshot. Entry to the zone is charged under a tourism office notice that took effect on 1 February 2024, with separate adult, child and foreign-visitor rates. The price table on this page carries those official rates plus Detik's banana-boat and gazebo figures. Other sources quote different gate numbers, and the Tanjung Bira entrance fee guide sets them side by side.

What can you do on the sand and in the water?

The national tourism site and Detik list these activities.

  • Snorkel. Residents hire out gear, Detik says. The choice between swimming out and taking a boat is covered in the guide to snorkeling in Tanjung Bira.
  • Dive. Diving appears in the tourism site's activity list, but it is an operator-run outing rather than something you start from a towel. See diving in Bira.
  • Ride a banana or donut boat. Detik gives a per-ride figure from 2024 in the price table. Ask whether it is per person or per boat before you climb on.
  • Cross to Liukang Loe. The island trip is listed as a beach activity. Details and boat rates sit in the Liukang Loe island guide.
  • Rent a gazebo and eat. Since Detik says the rental depends on time, settle the price and the period before you sit down.

For plans beyond the shoreline, see the wider list of things to do in Bira. If you are still placing the cape on a map, our Bira Sulawesi overview covers the basics.

When is it most crowded?

Weekends and school holidays, on the Seascapes guide's account, because that is when people from Makassar make the drive. Over one long weekend in September 2024 the Bulukumba tourism office recorded about three times the visitors of the previous week's three-day period, a count for the wider zone and for that one pair of dates only. The exact figures are on the best time to visit page.

Before you fix dates, look up Indonesian public holidays and school breaks.

If the main beach is too busy for you, Seascapes says Bara Beach lies roughly 2.5 km west-north-west of Bira village and can be walked along the sand in about half an hour. That operator is based at Bara and other sources disagree on the walk, which is why the Bara and Bira comparison lays out each figure with its origin.

Is the water safe to swim in?

No one on the sand is paid to watch you. The Seascapes guide states that there are no lifeguards on any beach in Bira. Australia's Smartraveller adds the national context: many beaches in Indonesia are unpatrolled and can be dangerous because of rough seas and strong currents. Neither source is saying this beach is dangerous on a given day. Together they mean the decision and the risk are yours.

So, on any beach day:

  • Swim with someone, and keep children within arm's reach instead of relying on calm-looking water.
  • Stay clear of boats. Crossings leave from the sand, according to the resort guide, so the water near loading boats is not a swimming area.
  • Ask stallholders or boatmen how the water is behaving before you go in. If they warn you off, stay out. If they say it is fine, that does not oblige you: check the BMKG marine forecast and stay ashore if you are unsure.
  • Stay out when the waves pick up, and after dark.

The wider safety picture for the cape is on the page asking whether Tanjung Bira is safe.

Is the sand clean at low tide?

Reports conflict, and the most critical one is old. Nomadic Notes reported broken glass in the sand at Bira Beach at low tide in 2015, and plastic and fishing rubbish on the east beach north of the ferry harbour. Journey Beyond Horizon, writing in 2025, calls the sand at Bira clean and pure white. The Indo Ocean report, whose publisher runs dive training here, says plastic-based debris is prevalent around these reefs, which is a finding about the sea and not about this beach.

The tourism listing does not address litter at all. Keep something on your feet for your first walk along the waterline at low tide, and check the sand before children run on it.

When is the beach at its best?

The national tourism site calls April to October the ideal dry-season window, while other sources draw the seasons differently, and the guide to the best time to visit Bira sets those disagreements out. For the sand itself, the factor you control most is the calendar. A day inside that window that avoids a long weekend or school break gives you a reasonable chance of dry weather and room to spread out.

Allow for the journey too. The road from Makassar to Bira is long enough that a single-night trip leaves little time on the beach once you subtract both drives.

What else should you know about Bira Beach?

What is the sand like at Tanjung Bira?

The national tourism site describes it as very fine and white. That is an official promotional description, and the look of the shoreline can change with tide and season.

Is Bira Beach open all day?

The tourism site lists it as open 24 hours every day. That covers access only. It says nothing about lighting or supervision, and food stalls keep their own hours.

Are there toilets at Bira Beach?

Yes, public toilets are listed along with parking and a prayer room. Ask your lodging about their condition and about showers.

Is there a lifeguard at Bira Beach?

No, according to the Seascapes resort guide, which says no beach in Bira has lifeguards. Swim with a companion and ask locally about conditions before going in.

Which published prices did we check?

Public third-party rates and official notices, each with its source and the month we checked it. Sources disagree, some figures are old, and rates change, so check the source before you rely on a figure. These are not our offers.
