By Bira Sulawesi Editorial Desk

The best time to visit Bira depends on which source you trust, because they disagree on the wet season. All of them do treat September as dry, and a diver's forum post includes it too. Wind, ferry disruption and long weekends still apply, so keep your dates flexible and check the forecast.
What is the best time to visit Bira?
If you are working out the best time to visit Tanjung Bira for dry weather, start with September. For diving, one forum diver says July or August onwards, while Seascapes says April to November. To avoid crowds, choose weekdays outside school holidays in any month. That is an editorial reading of sources that do not line up, so the rest of this page shows you the disagreement and lets you weigh it for your own trip.
One label matters before any numbers. The most detailed Tanjung Bira weather data available is actually for Bulukumba town at -5.55, 120.18, not for the cape, and it comes from a model. Treat it as regional. Also check coordinates whenever you look up Bira weather on a climate site, because Bira is a name shared with other places in Indonesia, and a search can return one of those instead. Wikipedia gives the Tanjung Bira village centre at about -5.58, 120.46. Our Bira Sulawesi page explains how that village relates to the cape and its beaches.

Why do sources disagree on the wet season?
The Tanjung Bira rainy season has no single agreed start or end, because these sources measure different things, use different boundaries and have different reasons to publish.
| Source and type | What it says | Caveat |
|---|---|---|
| National tourism site (government) | April to October is the ideal dry-season window | A promotional window, not monthly rain data |
| Seascapes Bira guide (resort) | April to November is dry with calm seas; December to March brings wind and short heavy showers | An operator's description, not measured |
| Sulawesi.com destination page (sells tours and car hire) | Lists rain for Bira by month: May wettest at 297 mm, September driest at 30 mm | Conflicts with Weather Spark on the wet peak |
| Weather Spark (climate model) | Wetter from 9 November to 3 May, drier from 3 May to 9 November; January rainiest, August driest | Modelled for Bulukumba town, not the cape |
May is the sharpest conflict. The national tourism site and the Seascapes guide both put it inside the dry window, Weather Spark has the drier season starting in its first days, and Sulawesi.com names it the wettest month of the year. If May is your only option, keep any boat day flexible and pack for rain.
Temperature is unlikely to decide your trip. Weather Spark gives typical temperatures of 72°F to 88°F for Bulukumba (about 22°C to 31°C) and sea water of 81°F to 85°F (about 27°C to 29°C) across the year. Rain and wind are the variables to plan around.
When is the wind strongest?
The sources point in different directions. Weather Spark shows a windier period from 19 May to 8 October for Bulukumba, and calls early July to mid September its top general outdoor period. The Seascapes guide puts wind in December to March. Sulawesi.com says November to March brings strong onshore winds.
They are also measuring different things: an averaged wind speed for a town is one measure, and a seller describing onshore wind at a beach is another. For a beach day or a boat trip, direction matters as much as strength. Tevana House Reef, an operator, says that with the east winds its coast is protected from waves, which suits freediving and snorkelling. Open water does not get that shelter, as the next section shows. So ask two questions on any given day: where is the wind coming from, and which water are you going on?
When are boat trips and ferries most likely to be disrupted?
Two recent ASDP cases show that disruption is not limited to one season:
- February 2026: ASDP Selayar postponed sailings on the Bira island route because of extreme weather, Detik reported.
- August 2026: ASDP ran on-off sailing at Bira because of east wind and waves, in what most calendars above call the dry season. The master decides in coordination with the harbour master, usually for hours rather than days, according to Detik.
For small boats, Sulawesi.com claims that charters to Liukang stop on most days from November to March. That comes from one agency, so ask locally before you write off those months. The working rule is to avoid a plan where one boat has to run on one specific morning. If you have an onward connection, put a spare day between the crossing and the flight. The Bira ferry port guide has the practical checks for the crossing itself.
When do divers say to go?
The evidence is thin, and it comes from a forum and an operator. A diver on ScubaBoard wrote in January 2023 that the best season is July or August to October or November, with many drift dives that are gentle to moderate. The Seascapes guide reports visibility regularly reaching 20 to 30 m from April to November and more than thirty named sites within about forty minutes by boat. That is an operator's report.
Freedivers have one more date to check. Seascapes says Freedive Sulawesi teaches from March to December, which is reported by a neighbouring property, so confirm with the school before booking flights around a course. See diving in Bira for sites and conditions, and freediving in Bira for courses. No season guarantees what you will see underwater.
Which dates bring crowds?
The Seascapes guide says Bira Beach is busiest at weekends and in school holidays, when Makassar residents drive down. The local tourism office supplies the number that shows how large the swing can be. It recorded 2,202 visitors on 7 to 9 September 2024 and 6,796 on the long weekend of 14 to 16 September 2024, about three times as many, one week apart, in the same dry month. The earlier window overlaps the dates announced for that year's festival, so it is not a clean baseline, and the pair says nothing about other seasons.
Festival Pinisi is the other date to look up, and it moves. RRI reported that Festival Pinisi XVI ran from 15 to 17 October 2026, opening at Pantai Merpati, while the tourism office announced the 2024 edition for 6 to 8 September. Do not carry one year's dates into the next. The Festival Pinisi guide covers what happens, if you want to go rather than avoid it. By priority:
- Driest odds: September, or August if you prefer Weather Spark's reading.
- Calm mornings on the water: ask about wind direction on the day, whatever the month.
- Fewest people: weekdays, away from school holidays and long weekends.
- Culture: the festival dates for your year, once announced.
Does Ramadan change a trip to Bira?
It changes the daily routine more than the route. Ramadan's dates vary by year, and the UK government gives 19 February to 20 March for 2026. During the month it tells visitors not to eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public in the daytime. It also advises checking the opening hours of shops and restaurants, following local dress codes, and expecting erratic driving around dusk.
That is national advice for British travellers. No source we can point to describes how warungs on this cape handle the fast, though Indonesian Wikipedia says most residents of nearby Ara village are Muslim. Before a trip in those weeks, ask your lodging which kitchens serve at midday, and aim to finish the drive from Makassar well before dusk.
Where can you check the forecast?
Use BMKG's marine forecast for Bulukumba waters, Indonesia's official page for this stretch of sea, and check it on the day you plan to go out. Every source above describes averages or past events, and none of them is a forecast for your dates. Check it the evening before a boat trip as well. A no from the boatman or operator settles it. A yes does not oblige you: check BMKG and the life jackets, and stay ashore if you are unsure.
What else should you know about Bira weather?
When is the dry season in Tanjung Bira?
It depends on the source. The national tourism site says April to October, the Seascapes resort guide says April to November, and the Weather Spark model for Bulukumba town runs from 3 May to 9 November.
What month is best for Tanjung Bira?
September is the safest single answer for dry weather, since all the sources on this page place it on the dry side and Sulawesi.com names it the driest. Check the holiday calendar too, because long weekends bring crowds.
Does it rain in Tanjung Bira in December?
Plan on it. Seascapes describes December to March as windy with short heavy showers, and Weather Spark places December inside the wetter season for Bulukumba town. Neither is a forecast for your dates.
When is the best time to dive in Bira?
One diver on ScubaBoard named July or August through October or November in a January 2023 post. The Seascapes guide reports visibility regularly reaching 20 to 30 m from April to November. Both are reports and not guarantees.
Can ferries stop during the dry season?
Yes. Detik reported that ASDP ran on-off sailing at Bira in August 2026 because of east wind and waves, usually for hours rather than days. Leave a margin before any onward flight.

How do I reach the desk?
This guide cannot promise weather or a sailing, and the desk does not either. If you are weighing two sets of dates, send them with your plans on WhatsApp 6281139414563 or to bd@juaraholding.com.
The desk has a commercial interest, since a request may turn into a paid booking. Only a written offer binds, and it states any fee, the price and the contracting company before you agree.
Send the desk your dates, group size, and what you want to do. The desk replies in writing.
