Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. They are third-party figures, sources can disagree, and none of them is our offer.
Bira ferry port sits at the south end of Panrang Luhu Beach on the east-facing side of the cape, and carries, according to Seascapes, car ferries to Pamatata, plus longer ASDP island routes. Treat no timetable as fixed: Detik's April 2026 report on one route says schedules can change and asks passengers to arrive 60 minutes early. Weather disrupted sailings in February and August 2026.
Where is Bira ferry port?
The tourism ministry's village platform places Bira port at the south end of Panrang Luhu Beach, an east-facing beach of about 1.5 km with a pinisi yard at its north end. A second landmark helps: Detik puts the turn-off for Puncak Pua Janggo about 200 m north of the port. Ask your host how long to allow from your lodging.
Getting to the port from further away is less tidy. A travel blog says most Makassar buses end in Bulukumba or continue 30 to 40 minutes to Bira, while Benteng-bound through buses board the ferry. The national tourism site gives about an hour from Bulukumba town to the beach, which is not the same estimate. If your connection matters, use the longer one. Our bus guide and Makassar to Bira page cover the overland leg.
Which routes use it?
Two services matter here, and they are reported very differently. The notes below look at the port from the Bira side.
| Route | What is reported | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Bira to Pamatata | Car ferries several times a day, about 1.5 to 2 hours, with times not reliably published | Seascapes (resort guide) |
| Bira, Patumbukan, Kayuadi, Jinato, Jampea, Bonerate, Kalaotoa | KMP Taka Bonerate, six trips in the month | Detik, on ASDP's April 2026 schedule |
The second row is one month's schedule and is included as evidence of how the route is reported, not as a guide to future months. The price table on this page lists April 2026 tariffs for Bira to Patumbukan as Detik reported them, covering an adult, an infant and a class IV passenger vehicle. Those rows are for that sector. Do not assume they apply to Pamatata, and check the current fare before you travel.
How do you find a current schedule?
You ask close to the day. Seascapes says Pamatata times are not reliably published, and Detik's report on the other route warns that the schedule can change at any time. A table of departure times would look helpful and could strand you.
A workable routine:
- Search for ASDP's latest notice or a dated press report for the current month, and read the date before the times.
- Ask your host or driver the evening before what the port is saying.
- Check the marine forecast the same evening and again in the morning.
- Decide on a fallback if the sailing you want does not run, and know where you would sleep.
Why are sailings delayed?
Weather is the reason in both recent cases below, and they came six months apart.
| When | What happened | Reported by |
|---|---|---|
| Early February 2026 | ASDP Selayar postponed sailings on the Bira island route because of extreme weather | Detik |
| August 2026 | ASDP ran on-off sailing at Bira because of east wind and waves | Detik |
The August case is the useful one to study, because August sits inside the dry window that several sources describe. Disruption is not limited to the wet months. Detik's report says the ship's master decides in coordination with the harbour master, and that closures usually last hours and not days. Read that as a tendency and not a limit.
The practical lesson concerns connections. Our reading is to sleep in Makassar the night before a flight, and that matters more after a return crossing. Our airport transfer guide has the rest of that advice. A spare night on the mainland side is the simplest protection if sailings run on-off.
When should you arrive?
Detik's April 2026 report asks passengers to arrive 60 minutes before departure. That wording belongs to the schedule it covers, but it is the only published figure here and, in our view, a sensible minimum for the Pamatata crossing as well. Ask about vehicles separately if you are taking a car or motorbike across.
Build the hour on top of the drive. If you are coming from Bulukumba, or from a lodging on the western side, leave room for the slow road as well as the check-in time. After dark is a poor time to be rushing on the cape, and the safety page explains why.
How do you pay?
ASDP has said tickets at Bira and Pamatata can be paid cashless by virtual account, prepaid card and e-wallet since 21 June 2022. That is an official statement from the operator, but it dates from 2022 and does not say that foreign cards work with those channels. Many international visitors will not have an Indonesian e-wallet or a local bank account, so ask your host how a visitor without one buys a ticket today.
Keep cash anyway for everything around the ticket. Seascapes says card acceptance outside resorts is close to non-existent and that the nearest reliable ATMs are about forty minutes away in Bulukumba. The cash and signal guide has more on carrying enough before you reach the cape.
What should you check for your own safety?
The UK government's warning covers ferries as well as small boats: seas can change quickly and standards vary. Before boarding, go through this short list:
- Forecast. Read the BMKG marine forecast for Bulukumba waters on the day. An on-off pattern means conditions are unsettled; you can still choose to wait.
- Life jackets. The UK government advises checking life jackets and lifeboats, and notes that children's life jackets are not always available. Families should ask before boarding.
- Timing. Smartraveller advises wearing a life jacket and avoiding water travel after dark, in storms or in rough weather. If a late departure looks rough, stay ashore.
- Vehicles. Our own suggestion, not from a source: on a car ferry, stay out of the way during loading, and do not stand between vehicles as they move.
- Swimmers. A kite-sport site warns of heavy boat traffic around the cape, including the car ferry. Keep well clear of the ramp and the approach.
What is nearby if a sailing is held?
A held ferry can leave you with hours to fill, and the port's location helps. Panrang Luhu Beach runs north from the port. Detik describes Puncak Pua Janggo as the highest point in Bira, holding the grave of a cleric who spread Islam there, so dress and behave accordingly if you go up. Stay within reach of the port and keep your phone charged, in case a held sailing restarts.
What else should you know about the port?
Where is the ferry port in Bira?
The tourism ministry's platform places it at the south end of Panrang Luhu Beach, an east-facing beach of about 1.5 km. Detik puts the Puncak Pua Janggo turn-off about 200 m north of it.
How early should I arrive at Bira port?
Detik's report on ASDP's April 2026 schedule asks passengers to arrive 60 minutes before departure. Treat that as a minimum and allow extra time for the drive to the port.
Do ferries from Bira get cancelled?
Sailings have been held by weather. Detik reported postponements in early February 2026 and on-off sailing in August 2026, when closures were said to last hours more often than days.
Can you pay cashless at Bira port?
ASDP has said tickets at Bira and Pamatata can be paid by virtual account, prepaid card and e-wallet since June 2022. Ask how a visitor without an Indonesian account pays today, and carry cash as well.
How long does the ferry from Bira to Pamatata take?
Seascapes, a Bira resort, says about 1.5 to 2 hours, with several crossings a day and times that are not reliably published. Check close to the day, and allow for weather holds.
Which published prices did we check?
Public third-party rates and official notices, each with its source and the month we checked it. Sources disagree, some figures are old, and rates change, so check the source before you rely on a figure. These are not our offers.

How do I reach the desk?
The desk is not ASDP and cannot sell, hold or change a ferry ticket. For help planning a stay around a crossing, send your dates and flight times to WhatsApp +62 811-3941-4563 or bd@juaraholding.com. Because a request can end in a paid booking, we have a commercial interest, and anything we offer would be set out in writing, with the price and the contracting company, before you agree.
Send the desk your dates, group size, and what you want to do. The desk replies in writing.
