Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. They are third-party figures, sources can disagree, and none of them is our offer.

An ATM in Tanjung Bira is not something to count on, according to a resort guide: it reports few, unreliable machines close in, with dependable ones in Bulukumba town about forty minutes away. The same operator says most warungs, parking and the gate take cash only, and that Telkomsel has the steadiest signal. Recheck locally, as nearly all this comes from one source.

Is there an ATM in Tanjung Bira?

Do not plan around it. Nearly everything published on this subject comes from Seascapes, a resort on Bara Beach, across two of its pages. Its location page says ATMs are in Bulukumba town and that the few closer in are unreliable. Its Tanjung Bira guide says the nearest reliable machines are about forty minutes away in Bulukumba. That is a useful warning, but a single operator's account can go out of date as soon as a machine is installed or breaks down.

How far is that really? The national tourism site gives about 40 km and about an hour between Bulukumba town and the beach, so the two sources disagree on the time. Either way, a return trip for cash uses up a good part of a morning. The sensible approach is to withdraw what you need in Makassar or as you pass through Bulukumba, on the way in. The Makassar to Bira route guide shows where the town falls on the road.

How much of the trip is cash only?

Much of it, on the resort guide's account. This table sets out each point of payment with its source. Boats are included because there is no office to pay at.

The advice on small notes matters more than it sounds. If the gate cannot break a large note, and neither can a small warung late in the evening, you can hold plenty of money and still be unable to pay. Break big notes at a convenience store when you get the chance. This page does not name a sum to carry, because that depends on your length of stay, your lodging and whether you hire a boat. For the two listed figures most likely to affect your cash, the gate and motorbike hire, see the price table on this page, and for the wider picture of gate charges, the entrance fee guide.

Can you pay by card?

Mostly at resorts, if at all. The Seascapes guide says card acceptance outside the resorts is close to non-existent. If you are counting on a card for your room bill, get written confirmation from the property before you travel, and ask specifically about foreign-issued cards. It also helps to tell your bank about the trip, as a declined card is a hard thing to solve from a place with few cash machines. Arrive with rupiah. We would not count on swapping foreign notes on the cape.

Which mobile network works?

Telkomsel, according to the location page, which says it has the most consistent coverage along the route and on the peninsula. That is the resort's observation and not a measured survey, so it says nothing about how fast data runs on a given stretch of beach. Buying a Telkomsel SIM before you leave Makassar avoids having to solve this once you are out of town.

Wi-Fi is a separate question, and it is one for your lodging. Remote workers should ask for a plain answer about speed and backup before paying for a room. Whatever your network, save the following offline before you set off:

  • A downloaded map of the cape and the road back to Bulukumba.
  • Your lodging's address, booking confirmation and phone number.
  • Any driver's details and the agreed pick-up time.

Can you use ride-hailing?

No, on the resort's account. The guide reports no Grab or Gojek. It also says no bus network serves trips around the peninsula, though the same resort describes buses and pete-pete coming in from Bulukumba. Getting around commonly means a rented motorbike, and the price table lists that operator's daily rate. The guide also carries a warning worth repeating: the roads are narrow and unlit, and riding them after dark on an unfamiliar rented bike is a risk. If you have not ridden much, stay close to your lodging in the evening, or arrange a car and driver in advance.

Our own suggestion, not from a source: before you hire a bike, check that your licence and travel insurance actually cover it, and inspect the brakes and lights. If you would rather not ride at all, choose lodging within walking distance of the beach you care about most. The guide on where to stay in Bira helps with that decision. A walk along the sand between beaches is sometimes possible too, and the Bara Beach comparison gives the conflicting times.

What about ferry tickets?

Here the usual advice flips. ASDP, the ferry operator, said in a press release that tickets at Bira and Pamatata ports can be paid cashless, by virtual account, prepaid card and e-wallet, since June 2022. So a wallet full of rupiah does not necessarily solve the ticket, and a foreign card may not fit the channels listed either. If you are crossing to Selayar, ask at the port or check with ASDP how a visitor without an Indonesian account pays, and do it the day before. The Bira ferry port guide covers the crossing.

Where can you buy basics?

The Seascapes guide reports an Indomaret and an Alfamart just north of the gate, open until about ten. Those are convenience chains, so expect water, snacks, toiletries and the like. Hours are one operator's note and can change. Have cash for them. If you are staying somewhere that serves breakfast only, plan dinner too, because the same guide says many homestays stop at breakfast and that warungs and kitchens wind down by about nine.

What else should you know about money and signal in Bira?

Are there ATMs in Tanjung Bira?

A resort guide reports only a few close in and calls them unreliable. It places dependable machines in Bulukumba town, so withdraw on the way down and do not rely on finding one at the cape.

Can you use a credit card in Tanjung Bira?

Rarely outside resorts, according to that guide, which calls acceptance close to non-existent. Confirm with your lodging in writing if you plan to pay a room bill by card.

Which SIM card works in Tanjung Bira?

Telkomsel is the one a resort names as having the most consistent coverage along the route and on the peninsula. Treat it as one operator's pointer.

Is Grab available in Tanjung Bira?

No, says the resort guide, which reports no ride-hailing on the peninsula. Arrange a driver or rent a motorbike, and take care on unlit roads at night.

Which published prices did we check?

Public third-party rates and official notices, each with its source and the month we checked it. Sources disagree, some figures are old, and rates change, so check the source before you rely on a figure. These are not our offers.
